I usually get this backward but I believe it is the engine coolant temp sensor reading that's monkeyed with. As an aside, there is a way to statically change injector timing but it involves slightly rotating the trigger contacts in the distributor. I've not tried this but I've heard it is not much of a difference.
While we're at it, make a note of the ECU part number. I had one that was supposedly for a B20 but the ECU p/n was for a 164E. Ran OK but the idle had a bad habit of getting slower and sloower and slooower until it wouldn't stay running at lights. This was over the course of an hour or more.

The adjustability is enough that you could easily make things lean enough to do damage. I guess you could check plugs compulsively and listen for pinking.

I have one and I think it's fine. Not great, but fine. Makes a difference though.
Would MegaSquirt or even a Weber work better?
Yes and no, respectively. Well, depends on the Weber you mean. D-jet is like buckskins and stone axes compared to modern systems but it still responds better to changing demands and conditions than a DGV.
