91 740t rear Brake Caliper piston size determination 700

Hi folks
I have a 91 Turbo 740 sedan with ATE rear calipers. I recently found I had a stuck pistion in one and ran into the "38 or 40?" question at the parts shop.

The Parts folks computer says that all the Sedans are 38mm.Based on what I read here and in the manual I'm not sure I believe that! Morpheys law you know!

Short of completely diassembling the caliper, can I remove the caliper and measure either the outside or the inside of the piston with the boot still in place. If so what should I expect for the inside measurement on the "38"? On the "40".

The objective here is not to be broken down for 2 days or so while the parts get shipped in overnight or two days.

I have read the FAQ!

Regards
