760 Turbo fuel pump question 700

I've got an '84 760 Turbo that has a slightly noisy main fuel pump. The fuse isn't getting hot, but it seems that I shouldn't be able to hear the main pump with the engine running. If I take the fuel cap off and listen ( with car running), I can hear the intank pump running. The car also has a very occasional hesitation when I floor it ( like the fuel flow got cutoff). Could the intank filter/sock be getting sucked into the pickup tube? I might remove it all together and see what happens. Why would I need it since there's a filter next to the main pump? BTW, the main pump is 2.5 years old ( OE Bosch) and the fuel filter was changed last month.

Thanks in advance,

Dave
