Often it is decayed wiring that shorts and kills the relay. So you should look underneath the car for a wire that drops down from center of the body almost directly to the topside of the transmission and plugs into the OD. Often this wire will be completely bare and when it shorts against the transmission the OD won't work and sometimes it will kill the relay.

If you find it bare, insulate it somehow, heat shrink, electrical tape, duct tape? Then replace the relay with a new one, or test the old one to make sure it is working.
