Windshield moldings 700 1991

Need help re-attaching the trim molding on my 91 745t

I've got the needed clips, but have a question as to how to use them...

The windshield clips attach to the body via a stepped, diagonal slot in the clip. The question is: Do I attach the clips to the body first, and then attach the molding to the clip? Or do I pop the clip onto the backside of the molding first, and then try to attach it to the body?

On a similar, yet different, note: Does anyone know where the 2 odd clips for the rear hatch moldings go? Dealer shows 15 of one #, and 2 of a different #. 15 are black, and the other 2 are blue. Where are the blue clips used?
