Radiator Fan 900 1993

My 960 has occasionally had the fan come on all by itself. I've had to disconnect the plug to stop it, since it's not ignition wired. The latest event wore the battery down before it quit. Is it the temp sensor? Anyone familar with the problem or circuit ?
