Replacing Speedometer in instrument panel 700 1986

Just redoing my 'new' 1986 745 to make it drivable. The speedometer/odometer do not work..the other guages are OK. When I installed a spare instument panel (unknown year, turbo 700 series) the speedometer worked, so the problem is not with the sender or the wires. The fuel/charge guages on this panel worked but only at a very low level...also only the high beam, seat belt and oil idiot lights came on.
could I just dismantle the turbo panel, remove the speedo and install in the original 86 panel? the turbo seems to have 2 bolts poking out for mounting that the 86 panel does not have?
Anyone done this before?
