Hissing sound when turbo needle gets to yellow 700 1986

I noticed today the slightest hissing sound as I began acceleration at around 30-40mph, and just as the turbo needle starts to approach the yellow area. It subsides when I let up off the gas, even if the car is cruising along at 40-50-60-70 mph. Checked hoses (tops and bottoms) and I can SEE no breaks, and tugged on hoses and the connections are tight and not giving, yet this hiss is persistent. Next I'll see if I can hoist it up on a lift and check the exhaust, but as I sit in the driver's seat I can definitely hear the sound coming from the passenger side (where the turbo resides). Any ideas? Something I might not be aware of (probably ...)
