I've had *excellent* service from the VR6 in my '95 Jetta. I bought it new, and so far I've put 190K miles on it without the slightest complaint from it. Other than a water pump, that is. Still seems to be in as-new condition, still pulls like a freight train, revs like a champs. The car surrounding it, however, is starting to feel its age a little...
