'Floaty' Tach and intermittent stalling 700 1990

The car is my 1990 745T. The symptoms started about 2 months ago and of course, are intermittent!

What happened and has happened twice more is that the car just quits. It happened twice to me at stop lights. I try to restart it, and it just barely "chugs" along, idiot lights flashing on and off. Then it dies again. Then I try to start it again, and it barley chugs along, ... same scenario. The car does not have enough power to even move at this point. Finally after 3, 4, 5, 6 starts, it runs fine like nothing happened.

What I think may be the clue - the tach is not reading correctly. It seems to be 500-700 RPM higher than what the motor is actually doing. Then when I shut the car off, it just slowy, I mean slowy goes down to about 100-200 RPM. It takes 6-7 seconds. It never sits all the way down either. The tach is electronic and on my 93 944T, when you shut off the car, it drops to zero instantly.

I have read the codes, and initially it said the Throttle Position Sensor was bad, so I replaced it. Now, no codes show up after an "episode". I have also checked the coil, the RPM sensor and they seem fine. I have also cheked the Ignition sender (on the left fenderwell - small black connector/box) and the Mitchell tests say it is okay, but I am still suspicious. Right now, the Mitchell manual is pointing at the Ignition ECU. Argh! $450 rebuilt, $1000 new.

So I am thinking that the "floaty" tach is the clue. Anybody else out there have a problem like this?
