Peculiar sound when starting engine (loud pop) 200 1983

Our 1983 GL (normally aspirated) makes a funny noise when starting (at least when cold). There is one moderately loud pop. I don't know how long this has gone on; we just replaced the intermediate pipe between the catalytic converter and the first muffler. So, either we didn't hear it before, due to the muffler not muffling, or it is new since the exhaust path is sealed up.

I think it sounds kind of like a backfire. I don't know if it happens when the engine is warm; it is my son's car and I'm not around when he has driven for a while then restarts.

Any diagnosis?
