1985 240 DL RADIATOR URGENT!!!!!!!!!!! 200

HI and a good morning to all. I have recently started working on an 85 240, It had not been run for several years,I live in vermont the Temp is around ten degrees. THe question is when you are standing in front of the car with the hood open and looking down at the radiator, there is a plug installed in top of the radiator. this car had a plastic push in plug . The plug is located just above the transmission cooling lines. I had left the car at idle the other day then shut it down.when I returned the next day to work on the car I found that the plug had popped out of the radiator.spilling fluid.has anyone seen this before. What is the purpose of the plug?. Checked another volvo 240 and this one had a brass push in plug installed. Any one out there with any ideas or experience with this. THanks
