Thanks for the quick response.
Over 4 days the check engine light has actually come on twice and subsequently goes out after a few trips. The code is then stored. No missing or misfiring seems apparent as I drive even though I am quite "tuned in" to the sounds and feel of my car. Even if I catch the misfiring it will be a transitory thing and therefore difficult to nail down a cause.
