Cooling/Fan Problem...How often does this happen?

Ok....son's 244 has started overheating when running at idle (in drive-up lane, parked in front of girl friends house, etc.). Checked the car tonight and notice that the fan is rubbing against the lower fan shroud. After removing the fan shroud and starting the car I notice that the fan gave a good roar for about a minute and then fell silent as it switched to freewheel mode. I le the car idle until past the 3/4 mark on the gauge (guage works great...comp board has been bypassed) and fan never did cut in. Shut car down and fan is completely freewheel. Also noticed that when I squeeze the upper hose there is no pressure but I can hear air freely going past the rad cap on the overflow tank indicating that is dead too.

I think this all goes back to a fender bender he had about five months ago when he creamed a Jetta with minor "brick to VW" collision. I think this shifted the drivetrain just far enough forward on the mounts to allow the fan to rub against the shroud eventually killing the fanclutch. I also notice that the oilfilter is so close to the motor mount now that it is difficult to get a wrench on to remove. So I am thinking new fanclutch, fan, pressure cap, motor mounts, and hoses (sure). Or should I scrap the fan, fanclutch, and shroud and fit a bid electric fan????

Does this all make sense...am I missing some deeper Volvo meaning?
