740 GLE sedan - rain getting in 700 1990

It's rained quite heavily where I live since Christmas. My car has spent most of the time parked outside, on a very slight upslope. I've probably not driven more than 200 miles. The interior began to smell, and I discovered that the carpet behind the driver's seat is really saturated with water. Less soaked are the carpet behind the front passenger seat and the carpet in front of the drivers seat. I've gone through the FAQ and identified several apparently common sources of possible leaks that I will be investigating; I just wanted to throw this out and ask if the concentration of the water behind the drivers seat points to anything in particular. I note that rear-facing heater vents are built into the bases of the front seats; are these ever known to leak water onto the rear carpets? My car has an electric sunroof but the headliner material seems to be dry.
