Why is the metal part in the spark plug wire eaten away? 200 1990

It's a 1990 244DL.

So I pulled off the plug wires from the dist cap. Two of the four wires seem to have the metal part half eaten away! It's like the metal was vaporized! Why or how did this happen? They were the Maganacore from IPD.

On another note - I went to advance to get a replacement set of wires. The set didn't fit. It had this metal jacket on it. The metal prevented it from getting all the way down over the plugs. So I thought if I took off the metal it would fit. It then wouldn't snap over the plugs! It's like the nipple on the plugs is different from the recepticle on the wires. Why is this? Can Advance be wrong? They double checked the part number. I'm heading back today to exchange them for a different brand and if those don't fit I'll head off to NAPA.
