The other day, after my brick warmed up, I went to switch the heater control from defrost to heat, and it was hard to move. I pushed a little harder and the control slid quickly all the way over to air conditioning. It was now jammed in this position.
After a search, reading the FAQ, my Haynes, and Chilton manuals, I dug in.
I had little trouble pulling the trim off and removed the face of the controls.
I found that the metal arm that is the control for the heat was catching on a small, round black knob protruding from some sort of round control on the right side of the control assembly.
The black knob is about 1/2 inch in diameter, behind it is a star-shaped spring washer, then these are on the back of a round, black control that is upright in the right side of the control assembly.
I pushed the small knob in slightly, and then I easily moved the control lever back to defrost. I then noticed that the lever is now jammed in defrost as it has passed to the other side of the small, protruding knob.
I think that the component on the right side is broken, and the spring washer has pushed the small knob toward the rear of the car, causing the small knob to jam the heat control lever.
Anyone have any experience with this component?
