Heater hose connections are always a #1 suspect. They are near the block and the heat hurries their demise.

You mention that there's coolant splattered about the front of the engine bay, so I would suspect something else. Perhaps it is the shaft seal of the water pump?

On the bottom side of the water pump is a hole, 2mm dia. or so. A drip there would hit a rotating part or belt and get flung away. Air filter box, etc.

Hard to tell. Maybe a flashlight and mirror with the engine stopped? If you see that as the culprit, a new water pump is the fix. A DIY job - see FAQs and maybe archives.
