could a clogged flame trap prevent starting? 200 1989

Hi,
Could a clogged flame trap, or some component of the system, keep a volvo from being able to start?
If a flame trap is clogged up, what else might be affected? Would there be gunk built up elsewhere? i.e. the sparkplugs?
