oil useage on 93 960

My son's '93 960 was using quite a bit of oil between oil changes. (three to four quarts). The fuel filter luckily clogged and made the car quit running, but when he checked the oil, it was 5 quarts low. (it holds 6). After putting a new fuel filter on, there seems to be no oil useage. Makes no sense to me. Any ideas why?
