Other cars like the 240s (preferrably newer) ? 200

If you were looking to replace a 240 with another car that provides the same level of durability, practicality and DIY friendliness what would it be ? I want to buy something newer but aside from the 1993-98 BMWs I can't think of any other car. Sure the Hondas are reliable but even the Civics have their engines shoe-horned into the engine-bay. I've heard good things about the Subarus like the Outback, Forester etc but I don't know anything about the Boxer engines...I enjoy working on cars so a DIY friendly car is very important.
