Which Redline product are you using with the OD? I've been threatening to do this as I cannot see a reason why synthetic would be bad for the OD unit (bulls**t penalty on the "too slippery" argument).

STP is known to quiet transmissions but it is not any kind of "fix."

Some trannys cannot be rebuilt (no bearings being manufactured anymore) so running it until it dies may be your only option. Try to get the serial number off it an look into replacement parts (especially the layshaft, laygear, laygera/shaft rollers and thrust washers). If they are available, then by all means rebuild it (it's easy).
