1988 speedometer problem 200

I had a problem with the odometer in my 1988, but the speedometer worked fine. I picked up an instrument panel on ebay from a 1987. It was slightly different, but when I replaced it, it accepted the same wires. The speedometer from the 87 worked for a few seconds then died. When I put my original instrument panel back, speedometer didn't work - Damn, should have left well enough alone. Anyone know how I can get my speedometer working again? Could I have shorted somthing out? Is there a fuse for this? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
