Update to Shiftlock problem (see my last post). 900

I suspected it was the dual circuit brake switch. Luckily I found the exact replacement part today at Autozone for 23 bucks! Getting it in is not easy - but this is how. Prepare to bend a bit.

Removed the lower dash cover (two star screws removed). Cover pops off, and then removed the courtesy light harness.

Next, removed the metal knee bolster (four bolts) - unit pops off easy - don't scratch any thing with it - set aside.

Removed the C clamp holding the cruise control release switch and the switch pops out of it's bracket easy (you will see this switch first under there).

The brake switch is bear to get to as it is above the cruise switch and has a metal flat plate that makes it difficult to get to, but it can be done.

You need a good shop light. Better put some music on. Remove the harness to it first (there are clips on both sides) and set it aside. Momentarily hook up the new switch to the dangling wiring connector and test brakes and shift lock - yes that was it - came right out of park easy - you feel relief at this point.

Now take a sharp thin screw driver or awl and pry the old switch out backward toward the rear of car (out of the metal bracket holding it in) - there are two small plastic clips on each side of the switch - that is all that holds it in the bracket. Study the new switch to see them.

Study the old and new switch. IMPORTANTE!, ACHTUNG!-(looky here)> The white bushing around the moveable switch pole must be pulled all the way out of black housing to allow the switch to be replaced easily - took a while to figure (finger) this out as I don't have a shop manual. Pull the two retaining clips apart and it will slid out the housing - set on the floor board in a ready to grab state.

Next, set the emergency brakes tight as you can and clear the area (yell clear) , start the car and depress the brake pedal and turn off the car holding the pedal down.

While holding the pedal down with one hand, you can re-insert the new switch very easy - the key is having the white bushing all the way out to allow the clips to bend in.

When it clicks into place and brake pedal is released you will hear the bushing click back into place.

Re-attach the wiring harness and test. That's it....

The old switch was worn and would not return all the way out, but the brake lights still worked - go figure.

Re-assemble the rest - and go trade it while its running :)
