Converting from R-12 to R-134

Yes, I was a little brief. I think the Volvo kit provides an improved condenser. You can't go wrong with one but I have never found it necessary and never tried one. In my conversions, results with stock old Volvo systems are about 50% chance of ending up with a freezer vs. a cooler.
79 242GT (York to rotary conversion only, all else stock)-cooler
83 242Ti (York to rotary) freezer
85 244Ti (York to rotary) freezer
91 245 ($70 Volvo kit) freezer
90 780 (&100 Volvo kit) cooler, issue with ACC, I think
89 244 (straight swap of gas +drier) cooler
88 244 (") cooler

These results indicate to me that the cooling produced is far more dependent on the system state and exact charge, compressor condition etc, than on the kit components used. After all, I have older condensers on the GT and 242Ti and they will freeze you out. Soooo, that is why I sy, in your '88, it is crazy to spend so much when you mihgt have fine results with a simple drier, fitting and R134a purchase.
