I agree, sounds like it needs a crank sensor. This lives in a lousy location on the top of the transmission behind the head. The wire to it will have a paint tag on it, yellow or white band of paint.

They only last about 10 years, so it's probably time for a new one.
Also good preventive measures- replace the fuel pump relay before it does the same thing for you. They're much cheaper than a single tow, and you can replace it in 10 minutes under the dashboard easily.
