tranny oil questions 140-160 1972

My only experience with the redline 80/90 replacement has been terrible. After changing over to it in my used m41 it started slipping out of gear on decel after 100 mi of a 4000 mi trip to wis. It then started to leak out of the old rear seal. After accomplishing a virtual change of fluid due to said leak it reverted to normal opperation. I took the tranny back & got another used one , but am reluctant to try it again as holding the car in 4th gear is a real PITA. I thought maybe the synchros needed the "non-slippery" fluid to operate properly, but it may be just worn synchros. Anyone able to confirm or deny this? A Seattle Volvo tranny specialist says " ONLY use 30w motor oil in the transmission!!!" for what that's worth
