fuel guage not working 200 1992

Hey all, quick question, our 92 244 has not had an operational fuel guage since we purchased her in November. The previous owner gave us the advice of using the trip odometer, filling up when it reads 300 miles. We have been doing that and the method works, but we are starting to long for that modern convience of a working guage again. The neeedle sits dead, all other guages and lights work fine. The local independant Volvo shop told me that 9 out 10 times its the sender, is this true? Wondering best way to troubleshoot this, I've been reading this board pretty much daily since we got her and don't recall seeing advice on this problem...Thanks
