Intermittent headlight outage 200 1988

Hi,
My left headlight intermittently works. When I turn on the ignition the headlight either works or does not (actually it has only recovered once). Prior to that the left parking lights did the same thing. Is there an obvious first place to look for the root cause? Could this be a short circuit driven by a cracked headlight lense? Or is this more likely a relay issue?
