another 'should I buy' post 200

I'm looking at a 93 classic 244. The body is in fantastic shape with hardly a door ding and no scratches. The car is one owner and has 130k. The show stopper (besides the $3500 firm asking price) is some strange ticking noises from the top end of the motor. The sound is there when cold and warm. It does drive fine with lots of power compared to my tired 81 244. I'd like to think that it's overdue for a valve adjustment or maybe exhaust manifold gaskets. The son who is selling the car for his mom says that it's always made the noise. Any advice? One more thing.. the temp gauge spikes to the red after startup. I know there is no way it could overheat that fast so I assume it's a connection in the cluster or at the sender. Thanks for reading. I like this car! BTW, it's got a little place on the dash that says its #604/1600???
