Matt,

since you have the old cable driven type of speedo in your '82,
take a power screwdriver and put the tip of it into the back of the speedo and press go!

this will turn them as if it was in the car. then you don't have to pull stuff apart to turn the gears and risk damaging anything. it may take a while depending on how many miles you have to go, but it is easier.
