dash arrow lite/o.d. relay 200

My 1993 240 has for some time had an intermittent ' dash arrow', from brickboard tried the re-solder routine without success. 'pulled one from my accumulation' checked/re-soldered it, while the white plastic housing was off plugged it in.
To my amazement it soon got so HOT i was unable to hold it! IS THIS NORMAL?
From my studies in electrical theory----heat is a by-product-of-overamperage!
i'm not 'blowing'fuses. am i being alarmed at something that occurs normally?
