'81 240 runs terrible-K Jet troubleshooting? Wierd Symptoms 200 1981

Hello
My '81 240 GL started to run terrible and I was hoping somebody knowledgeable with CIS could send me in the right direction. The symptoms happened suddenly while driving and include a very lopey idle, no power, and popping(running lean and backfiring into intake manifold). When revved out beyond 4.5k it smooths out and runs great as though all 4 cylinders are working as should. When ether is fogged into intake, idle smooths right out and runs great-verifies running lean. Visable check for vacuum leaks turned up nothing. Heres the kicker-ambient air temperature has a large effect on performance. Im in central NY where it is freezing out right now. Twice now I have brought the car inside only to have the problem dissapear. Note, engine temp has no effect on problem. Thanks in advance with any ideas.
