Installed an intercooler, didn't touch the wastegate. Am I bad? 200

My 1982 242 turbo feels quicker after installing an intercooler with attention to all details except the wastegate (and integrity of my battery tray when I moved the oil cooler). I have seen the turbo light flash a few times since the conversion that I didn't notice before - but I haven't driven the car more than 10 miles in the time I've had it, so I don't "know" it too well. Is the wink on my dashboard a common post implant syndrome? Can I work with the non-IC wastegate or do I have to swap it out? I think I read that the length of the hose coming off the nipple affects the dump point. In the intercooled setup should it be connected to the cool side of the intercooler? Some guidance would be appreciated.
