My 1990 740 GL Wagon, which has 195,000 miles has developed a problem with the relay as it relates to the headlights/power windows/a-c. If I just turn the ignition on with the headlight switch in the on position the headlights will go on and I can operate the power windows. As soon as I start the car, however, the lights and windows cease operating [most of the time. Occasionally they will still be on, though not too often]. On my '89 740 GL, when I had a similar problem I replaced a relay and this solved the problem, but not with the '90. I thought maybe there was something wrong with the relay I purchased [from a discount parts store, since I was out of my area visiting], but when I tried the original relay, the problem was still intermittant. Any thoughts from someone familiar with this problem?
A related problem with my '89 740 GL Wagon which has 25,000 miles, is that the headlights are acting strangely. The left [driver's side] lower beam works but the right [passenger side] does not. When I turn on the high beams, the right high beam works, but the left does not, and the right low beam stays off while the left is still on. Fuses are all good. Is this another relay problem? Once before I had a similar problem and I tapped on the connection at the back of the sealed beam and it went on, like it was a loose connection. It seems odd that 2 lights would stop working at the same time. Is it time to replace the sealed beam lights or is it a relay?
