testing an overdrive solenoid

Hi guys and gals,
Yesterday I brought my overdrive solenoid down to a friend who tried to test it by connecting the wire end to a positive 12 volts and the body of the solenoid to negative post. He said it was bad 'cuz it did not click in his hand. So, I went down to picknpull and got one out of a junk car. (Got the exchange package). When I tested it a home, I couldn't get it to click. But, I did take a resistance check. My solenoid had no resistance (short?) but the one I bought had resistance. Should I assume it's OK and install? I certainly don't want to have to lift up the '84 240DL again and go through the same procedure. Oh, by the way, do not take out the solenoid without putting a pan under the tranny, even though no fluid comes out. Had a big mess this morning with a 3' circular puddle to clean up. Live 'en learn!
