fuel rail 200 1986

This may sound stupid, but which way does the fuel flow in the injector rail? I assume that it flows from the side with the regulator to the side with the large rubber hose located towards the firewall. the large rubber hose on my car has hardened and cracked and is now barely attached to the fuel rail. Is this merely a return line? what are the implications of this ? please advise
