Here is what can cause an oil light to come on:
1. low oil pressure
2. faulty signal from sending unit ( falsely indicating low pressure)
Check the following.
- make sure you are using either 5W30 or 10W30 grade viscocity oil (I know this sounds wierd but there are people who put 0W20 into their motor). The wrong viscosity will cause low pressure because of the bearing clearances on the crankshaft.
-have you topped off your engine with any old oil? (like any oil sitting on a shelf for more than 3-4 months? Oil does go bad because the additives in it go bad and it doesn't do it's job properly then.
-Check for continuity on your oil sender wire back to the grey terminal box on the firewall or where ever it leads. Like someone mentioned before. The o-ring they are talking about could only dry up if you run low on oil for extended periods of time and just because you have 150K on your motor doesn't mean it is bad. this is most likely not your problem so don't worry about that right now.
-If you have access, install an oil pressure gauge in place of your sender to rule your sender out as a possibility of failure.
Hope this helps!
