I would check the AMM with the method described. It is possible it may be on it's way out. another check is to pull it out and make sure the 2 wires are still in there and that 1 or both of them is not burnt away or missing. that would cause it to not function properly. Although your AMM is not part of the ignition system, some of the outputs it sends to help the ignition to function as it should.
CO and the flame trap have nothing to do with driveability, those are emmissions related so I wouldn't suspect them to be a threat. if the flame trap is clogged it will only cause leaks and crap to build up inside your engine that is unecessary and lead to other mechanical problems.
Most likely this is an ignition problem considering misses do not come from fuel, unless the fuel is highly diluted with something like water, and I mean a lot of water. and combustion is interfered with. It is pretty hard to get water in your tank these days with winter addtives in gasoline, technology is better than it was in 1975.
Check the ignition coil resistence, bentley has a procedure and spec for this using an Ohmmeter, takes about 5 min to do, this is a static test only with no current running. If it checks out ok, warm up your car (the coil will warm up as well), then recheck it! It may still check out ok if the problem is intermitent. often times misses happen at higher speeds due to the strain on the ignition system at higher RPM.
Good luck.
