Earth strap to B280E Alternator?? 700 1989

I've just replaced the alternator on my 760 B280E. I've reconnected all wiring that was originally in place, but have noticed a slim braided earth strap on the chassis rail next to the alternator. This was not connected to anything and still isn't, the alternator works fine, as far as I can tell. The question is: this earth strap looks just right to connect to a small unused post on the back of the alternator - is that where it should be connected, perhaps to ensure a good earth?
I've checked the wiring diagrams in the Haynes Manual (UK) and can't really decide what the connections should be, and the text isn't helpfull. Any advice gratefully received.

p.s. following advice on "oil in coolant" problem after posting a qery at the beginning of the month, I've replaced the radiator and this has fixed the problem, no damage apparent to autobox either - thanks for the advice!
