Speedometer Cable Drive Gears 140-160 1971

After swapping in an M41 for the BW35 the 142E came with, my speedometer appears to read 8 - 10 mph lower than the actual speed, which makes me think I should try a drive gear with fewer teeth. I have no idea how many teeth there are on the gear that's in there now, so first order of business is to take a look at it. I have pulled that gear on another M41, but I can't remember if that was before or after I filled it with oil. Questions: Can I remove the drive gear without draining the tranny? Quick action with a cork? Anyone know of a site with info on these gears? Does Volvo still sell them? Any input will be much appreciated.
Bob S.
