Detailing new 240 200

I just picked up a nice one owner 1990 Volvo 240. The guy said it was repainted about 3 years ago but the silver paint is pretty bad. The sides will probably come out ok but the top surfaces need serious help. The only cleaner I have currently is some Mothers Cleaner Wax that's very, very old. I used it on a small spot on the hood and it basically just made it look worse. The spot turned dark and there wasn't any shine. Is the finish hopeless or is the something that can bring the paint out? The body is really nice with no dents or even any door dings so it would be great if I could fix it somehow. I appreciate any advice.
