I have been buying the "Continental" brand, "Ribbed" drivebelts belts from a well known Volvo parts seller and I think they are really lousy quality. I find that I need to constantly adjust them, especially with ambient temperature fluctuations (I think that a high quality belt only needs one hot weather and one cold weather adjustment).
These ribbed continentals just don't hold in place like the original non-ribbed belts did. I don't know if it is the ribbed design or that this brand is just crap. These belts also have a feel like plastic or some type of synthetic rubber. They just don't feel grabby like the non-ribbed design did; they seem to glaze quicker too. Bottom line Volvo OEM fit and quality and quietness was so much better.
In fact, I had bought some drivebelts from Pep Boys under the Dayco brand, and even those were better than these Continentals. These Continentals were also very cheap in price, and that is another reason I am suspecting crap.
I have had mixed results as to the quality of these type parts. Some of the rubber material parts, like the Scantech brand seals, etc., seem to be really crappy, as if someone mixed rubber and plastic together. (I decided to go to Volvo for these items next time I need them).
On the other hand the hardware parts (eg., Hepu water pumps), and electronic items (Bosch) seem to be just fine, and the prices are low (that is why I am not mentioning a business name here). I speak to the Owner from time to time and he never gave me the impression he knew he was selling inferior items. I suppose that would depend on lots of constant feedback too. Anyway, rather than complain about these belts I feel it is just more practical to find another source for rubber related parts.
Anyway, as for the question, does anyone know where I might get some of those original style high quality non-ribbed drivebelts, or at least a high quality rubber ribbed design? (PS. I think even Volvo is selling the ribbed design now).
Other quality after market brand suggestions would be nice too. Any opinion on the Gates brand?
Thanks,
diyer
