brake booster '71 models or compatible 140-160

the brake booster for my '71 144s only sometimes works. it seems dependant on the temperature of the air or perhaps whether or not oprah is being interesting. i have no clue. could it be the weathered plastic connector between the vacume hose and the booster? it's gooped up with some sort of sealant on my 164's booster; so could this be the same problem? it doesn't seem to be as tight of a fit as i think it should be. often times i'll be stopping and it will kick in after about a half to a full second of pressure on the pedal. anyone have any experience with these? i have a booster and master cylender, etc. on my 142 parts car if it needs to be switched.
