1988 760 TURBO HAS STALLING PROBLEMS HELP

" I have a 1988 760 turbo wagon which has been giving me a
long term headache with stalling. The problem is
intermittent sometimes will run fine for weeks at a time,
other times will run to the store and will not start...
sometimes while driving. It finally happened it front of my
mechanic. We have already replaced the distributer, the
coil the fuel pump relay... checked the radio control and the
ignition amplifier. Symptoms during failure... No power to
the fuel pump... no spark to the plugs. At the end of the
day he figured that it was the ECU but he did not have the
appropriate part to try it and by the following morning it
fixed itself. Question: is there anything else it could be
but the ECU (I have found it for about $240). I am at my
wits end about this. Can ANYONE advise?"

WHAT DOES THE ECU ACTUALLY DO?
