EEEYOWCH! Shockingly stupid distributor question 140-160 1973

I was doing my tuning and timing yesterday. I was repeatedly zapped as I adjusted the distributor. Does this mean:

A.) That my plug wires have had it?
B.) That I am an idiot for touching the distributor while the engine is running?

I have a related question about setting the points gap. I marked the distributor position, loosened it, and rotated so that the rubber bumper on the points was at the apex of the distributor cam lobe. Then, I set the gap and returned the distributor to the original position. Is there a smarter way to do this?

(I might know these things had I not been raised by professors.)
