So last night I went by to check out the 1990 240Dl for sale down the street.
The owner told me over the phone that he thought it had mileage in the low 100's, but was not sure, as he never drove it...his daughter did (though he says rarely).
He told me before I got there that it had the following problems:
Deployed Airbag
Non-functioning Odometer
Muffler problems
So the car is beautiful. In perfect physical shape. No major physical problems.
The airbag blew in a bumper to bumper accident that compressed the bumper shocks. No fender or hood damage, just a compressed bumper.
The rubber muffler mount is missing, but easily replaced
The odometer actually reads 140,692. The last reliable records from carfax puts the mileage at 140,506 on 2/5/2003. So the mileage could actually be closer to 160-180, though I would guess about 145/150 as they only drive it to the school 2 miles away.
I am concerned that neither the odometer problems or the airbag are listed on the carfax report. The report lists this as a good clean car.
If I every try and sell it to a normal person they are going to check carfax and see the 2 year gap in mileage.
My old 85 (DL 188k) needs about 500 in repairs to get it up to par. I would buy this car just for commuting and what not.
He wants 2k, but says he is flexible. How do I proceed? Do I buy it or pass it up? What do I offer him? How do I document the airbag and odometer issue?
I know the fixes and am not afraid of making them, I just want to cover my butt.
