Why is my 244 so loud??? 200 1990

I need some advice. I had a mechanic replace both motor mounts on my 244 because the engine was moving so much. After he did this, I drove it and now it is making a very loud rumbling noise, almost like it needs a muffler and seems to be running rough. I brought it back to him to have him look it over and see what happened. His opinion is that now I need to replace the tranny mount and ujoints. I don't see how this could be the cause of the loud rumbling. I had the mounts replaced because engine was vibrating so much and now it is still but the car sounds terrible while I'm driving. Any suggestions before I pay to have ujoints and tranny mount?
