urgent - shop waiting - cost to replace cracked head?

They may be sensitive about trying to save you $.$$. in suggesting the "good" head is OK without machining.

Usually they check for cracks BEFORE they start the machineing.

I would still suggest they take a "skim" cut to get a fresh surface with no defects and to guarantee flatness.

My $.02

BTW, by machining do they mean grinding valves etc as well as surfacing the gasket surface?????
