I was contemplating an engine swap in my 62 PV. I have heard of V8s being installed, but I think that is a bit extreme, and wonder about if the differential and other parts could handle that kind of power. I think that a V6 would be a much better choice. My goal is not to make a hot rod, but make the PV work like a new car with a reliable fuel injected engine with air conditioning, maybe even an automatic transmission.
After some research, I have decided that the standard equipment 3.8 liter engine from a late model Ford Mustang would be the best choice. Models from 1999 and later are rated at 190 hp. These engines are very cheap, because when Mustang owners buy a new engine they almost always buy the 4.6 L V8. This is important because I have a limited budget.
I would like to have an automatic transission, but I will go with a stick if the auto requires too much "adapting." Also an automatic might have cooling problems, and there is all that electical stuff that comes with modern tranmissions.
Either way, I would buy the engine and trans together with everything else under the hood right out of a wrecked car.
Besides the modifications to engine mounts, I would need to make the following changes: A new customized radiator with electric fan attached; a new customized heater that would be installed under the dash; a new customized driveshaft that would connect to a Ford transmission on one end and a Volvo (Spicer) rear end; changes to the floor for the new gear shifter; if it's a stick, a hydraulic clutch would have to be installed; a new dual exhaust system; extensive rewiring using a modern type fuse box; and a new duct system for the air/heating system.
I am hoping that the V6 will fit nicely without any body modifications. The problem area would be around the transmission. I haven't actually had access to one of these engines/transmissions to take measurements. I will do so before I go any further.
I would appreciate it, if anyone has any suggestions or comments.
